Windows 11 Kills Blue Screen of Death

It has now been a couple of weeks since Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 and excitement about the supposed new features has not tamped down. Developers who have tested the preview report a change in the infamous ‘Blue Screen of Death’ to a ‘Black Screen of Death’

For people who are not familiar with the term, the Blue Screen of Death or BSOD  is Window’s bug check or kernel error. It is the background colour of the error message that pops up when a PC running on a Windows operating system encounters a fault and then shuts down.

The BSOD was first introduced in Windows 3.0 as a way for system administrators to diagnose memory and hardware faults. In Windows 8, Microsoft added a ‘sad face’ emoji to the screen. QR codes that provide a shortcut to information about the issue were subsequently added in 2016.

It is not quite certain why Microsoft has decided to change the colour of the screen. Some people in developer circles have theorized that perhaps it is to maintain a uniform colour theme. This is because both the Login and Shutdown interfaces are in black colours.

Microsoft remains silent on the reasons for this change. However, since the new BSOD has not been fully enabled, the change remains undecided. Developers and Windows users and tech enthusiasts will just have to wait and see.
