We already know the future is technology – it’s evident in almost all spheres of human endeavors, from our personal lives to education, health, commerce, manufacturing, etc. We obviously cannot escape the advancing digitalization of the world as we know it. These articles cover software developers are In high demand, so why are they finding it difficult to get jobs?
Every year and particularly in this post-COVID era, new technologies and software development tools are being developed. As Satya Nadela (CEO of Microsoft) says, “We’ve seen two years’ worth of digital transformation in two months”.
Going forward, analysts predict an increase in growth in the global software development ecosystem. Software companies around the world are gearing up to meet the demand for technological solutions. As a result, we can expect that there will always be a demand for skilled software developers.
In fact, data from Statista predicts that the number of software developers in the world will grow from 4.8 million in 2019 to 28.7 million in 2024. In Africa alone, there are an estimated 690,000 software developers. More than half of them are from South Africa, Nigeria, and Egypt.
However, despite the high demand for software developers, many developers have a hard time getting jobs. It is not that software development companies are not hiring; they simply find it difficult to find suitable candidates who meet their specifications. Why?
We can easily finger four (4) reasons for this:
- Applicants do not have the specific technical skill required for the role.
- They may not have enough experience.
- They may lack vital soft skills.
- The company cannot meet their salary demands.
Let’s take a closer look at these issues:
- They do not have the specific technical skill required for the role.
The software development industry is quite broad and job roles are varied. Often, hiring companies are looking for a candidate with a very specific set of skills to occupy an open role. While your technical expertise is unarguably important, it may not just be what the hiring company needs at the moment.
- They may not have enough experience.
More than 30% of software developers are recent graduates with less than 2 years of work experience. It’s true that everybody was once a novice and began their career journey somewhere. But many hiring companies need someone who can hit the ground running and would not require a lot of supervision.
- They lack vital soft skills.
You might have the required technical expertise and experience for a software development job and still not yet it. Many candidates ignore vital soft skills like communication, teamwork, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, etc. If you do not have these, you most likely will not be considered for the job.
- The company cannot meet their salary demands
While everyone deserves fair pay for their work, many job applicants demand salaries the hiring company cannot match. You should look beyond just the salary when considering taking or rejecting an offer. Factors like the company culture, the work-life culture, and opportunities for growth and networking are equally important.
So in summary…
Are software developers in high demand? Yes. Do we still have developers without a job despite this demand? Yes. Being a good candidate for a software development role goes beyond merely knowing how to code. You will need to have certain soft skills and experience to boost your suitability.
You may not be the best candidate for all the openings you apply to. But with consistent hard work and self-improvement, you will definitely land a role soon. Don’t give up on yourself, you have value to offer.
Let’s hear your reasons why you think software developers are finding it difficult to get jobs despite the high demand for them.
